One of the biggest problem for novice designers is choosing of font. Which font is better for this poster? I should use serif or sans serif font for my blog? There is no absolutely right rule how to choose it. Choosing and mixing fonts is the craft which you can learn only with the experience.
But there are some basic rules and standards which help you make a good choice today. Your task is make your text attractive and readable. Follow the rules to do it.
1. Mix sans serif headline and serif text
Most of the time a serif with a sans serifs make a beautiful contrast. Try it. Sans serif headline and serif text.
2. Mix contrasting styles
If you want to make a contrast don’t use two sans serifs or two scripts. The contrast will be not enough and small differences will make a visual collision.
In this case you should mix a serif with a sans serif. It looks good.
3. Limit the number of different fonts
The maximum number of different fonts in single design project is 4. It’s better when you use 3 or less different fonts.
Why? It’s hard to find 4 or more contrast typefaces and your project will have a lack of consistency.
4. Select proportional fonts
Do not use monospaced fonts for the main text. They attract the attention to the letter form and the reader can’t concentrate on the message of text.
5. Use simple fonts for the body copy
The typeface for main text must be simple and distinctive. It is easier to read. Decorative fonts is for headlines, their aim is to attract attention. And then make read this main text.
